What is Algal omega-3?

In plain words

Algal omega-3 is a source of omega-3 fats made from algae rather than fish. The body uses these fats to build cell membranes and make signals that help regulate inflammation. Researchers study them for heart, brain, and eye health. Evidence varies by outcome, and findings from fish-derived omega-3 products do not always apply directly to algal products.

Technical definition

Algal omega-3 refers to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids derived from cultivated microalgae, primarily docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6 n-3) and, in some products, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5 n-3). These fatty acids become incorporated into cell membranes and serve as precursors for lipid signaling molecules; they also influence pathways involving receptors such as FFAR4 and nuclear PPARs rather than acting on a single target. In the United States, algal omega-3 products are marketed as foods or dietary supplements, which are not FDA-approved treatments for disease.
