What is Artichoke-leaf extract?

In plain words

Artichoke-leaf extract is made from the leaves of the artichoke plant. The body breaks down its plant compounds, and the extract may increase bile flow, which helps digest fats. Researchers study it for indigestion and cholesterol levels, but human studies remain limited. It can cause stomach upset or allergic reactions, especially in people allergic to related plants such as ragweed.

Technical definition

Artichoke-leaf extract is a botanical preparation from Cynara scolymus leaves containing caffeoylquinic acids, including cynarin and chlorogenic acid, and flavonoids such as luteolin derivatives. It has no single established molecular target; experimental findings suggest effects on bile secretion and cholesterol synthesis, including modulation of hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity. It is marketed as a dietary supplement in the United States, not as an FDA-approved drug.
