What is Astaxanthin?

In plain words

Astaxanthin is a red-orange pigment found in certain algae and seafood. The body absorbs it with dietary fat, and it can help limit reactions that damage fats in cells. Researchers study it for skin, eye, and heart health, as well as exercise recovery. Human studies are generally small, so clear health benefits and long-term safety remain uncertain.

Technical definition

Astaxanthin is a lipid-soluble xanthophyll carotenoid with a 40-carbon conjugated structure, produced by organisms including the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis and accumulated in salmon and crustaceans. Rather than acting through one established receptor, it interacts with lipid membranes and can quench singlet oxygen and other reactive species, supporting its study for antioxidant effects. It is marketed as a dietary supplement but is not FDA-approved to treat or prevent disease.
