What is Astragalus?

In plain words

Astragalus is a plant whose root has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine. The body breaks down and absorbs some of its compounds, while others interact with gut microbes. Researchers study it for effects on the immune system, inflammation, and fatigue. Evidence of benefit in people is limited, and it may interact with medicines that suppress the immune system.

Technical definition

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), also called huang qi, is a botanical whose root contains polysaccharides, triterpenoid saponins such as astragaloside IV, and flavonoids. Its constituents have been investigated for effects on immune and inflammatory signaling, but the whole botanical has no single established molecular target or receptor. In the United States, astragalus is marketed as a dietary supplement rather than an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
