What is Bacopa?
In plain words
Bacopa is an herb used in traditional Indian medicine. After digestion, the body breaks down its plant compounds, but how they reach and affect the brain is not fully understood. Researchers study bacopa extracts for memory and attention, with some small human trials suggesting benefits. Evidence remains limited, and stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea can occur.
Technical definition
Bacopa (Bacopa monnieri), also called brahmi, is a botanical whose extracts contain triterpenoid saponins, including bacosides. No single molecular target or established human mechanism defines its activity; preclinical research suggests effects on cholinergic signaling, oxidative stress pathways, and synaptic function. It is marketed as a dietary supplement in the United States, not an FDA-approved treatment for cognitive disorders.
