What is Beta-alanine?

In plain words

Beta-alanine is an amino acid, a small molecule the body makes naturally. The body combines it with another amino acid to make carnosine, which helps muscles manage acid buildup during hard exercise. Researchers study it mainly for improving performance during short, intense exercise. Benefits vary, and taking it can cause temporary skin tingling.

Technical definition

Beta-alanine is a non-proteinogenic beta-amino acid with its amino group on the beta carbon rather than the alpha carbon; it occurs naturally in the body and is not directly incorporated into proteins. Carnosine synthase combines it with L-histidine to form carnosine, a skeletal-muscle dipeptide that buffers hydrogen ions during intense exercise, rather than acting through a primary receptor target. In the United States, beta-alanine is marketed as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved drug.
