What is Betaine HCl?
In plain words
Betaine HCl is a form of betaine combined with hydrochloric acid, and some products also include pepsin, an enzyme that breaks down protein. It releases acid in the stomach, while the body can use betaine in normal chemical processes. Researchers study it for temporarily increasing stomach acidity and changing how some medicines are absorbed. Evidence that it improves digestive symptoms is limited, and it can irritate the digestive tract.
Technical definition
Betaine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of betaine (trimethylglycine), a naturally occurring amino acid derivative; formulations labeled “HCl with pepsin” also contain the digestive enzyme pepsin. It dissociates in gastric fluid and increases acidity rather than acting through a specific receptor; absorbed betaine can serve as a methyl donor in homocysteine metabolism. In the United States, it is marketed in dietary supplements but is not FDA-approved to treat low stomach acid.
