What is Bilberry?
In plain words
Bilberry is a small, dark-blue berry related to the blueberry. The body breaks down its plant pigments, and gut bacteria help turn them into other compounds. Researchers study bilberry for eye health, blood flow, and blood sugar control. Human studies have not established clear benefits for these uses, and concentrated extracts are less well studied than the fruit.
Technical definition
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a botanical whose fruit contains anthocyanins, glycosylated polyphenolic pigments; extracts vary in composition and concentration. Its constituents and their metabolites may influence oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling, and vascular function through multiple pathways rather than a single established receptor target. Bilberry is sold as a food and dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
