What is Black cohosh?

In plain words

Black cohosh is a plant in the buttercup family, and its underground parts are used in supplements. The body breaks down its plant chemicals, but how they might affect symptoms is not fully understood. Researchers study it mainly for menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats, with mixed results. Rare cases of serious liver injury have been reported with products labeled as black cohosh, although the cause is not always clear.

Technical definition

Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa, synonym Cimicifuga racemosa) is a North American botanical whose roots and rhizomes contain triterpene glycosides and phenolic compounds. Its active constituents and clinical mechanism remain uncertain; serotonergic signaling has been investigated, but no definitive molecular target or consistent estrogen-receptor activity has been established. It is marketed in the United States as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for menopausal symptoms.
