What is Boswellia?
In plain words
Boswellia is a tree whose resin is used in herbal supplements. The body absorbs and breaks down some of its compounds, which can affect signals involved in inflammation. Researchers study it mainly for joint pain and stiffness, especially in knee arthritis. Some trials suggest benefits, but the evidence is limited, and stomach upset can occur.
Technical definition
Boswellia serrata, or Indian frankincense, is a botanical whose gum resin contains pentacyclic triterpenes called boswellic acids. These compounds modulate inflammatory signaling in laboratory studies, including effects on 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme involved in leukotriene production; their absorption and activity vary by formulation. Boswellia products are marketed as dietary supplements in the United States and are not FDA-approved treatments for disease.
