What is Broccoli-sprout extract?

In plain words

Broccoli-sprout extract is made from young broccoli plants. Plant enzymes or gut bacteria can turn one of its compounds into sulforaphane, which helps switch on the body's cell-protection systems. Researchers study it for effects on inflammation, blood sugar control, and processes linked to cancer. Human evidence is still limited, and products can differ greatly in how much sulforaphane they deliver.

Technical definition

Broccoli-sprout extract is a botanical preparation derived from young Brassica oleracea var. italica plants and commonly contains glucoraphanin, a glucosinolate precursor of the isothiocyanate sulforaphane. Plant myrosinase or intestinal microbes can convert glucoraphanin to sulforaphane, which modifies the regulatory protein KEAP1 and activates NRF2-mediated cellular defense pathways; conversion varies with processing and extract composition. It is marketed as a dietary supplement in the United States, not as an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
