What is Bromelain?

In plain words

Bromelain is a group of protein-breaking enzymes from pineapple. In the digestive tract, these enzymes can cut proteins into smaller pieces and can themselves be broken down. Researchers study bromelain for digestion, swelling, and inflammation. Evidence for many supplement claims is limited, and it can cause stomach upset or allergic reactions.

Technical definition

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes, predominantly cysteine proteases, obtained from pineapple (Ananas comosus) stems or fruit. These enzymes hydrolyze peptide bonds in proteins rather than acting through a single specific receptor; research examines their effects on digestion, inflammation, and tissue breakdown. In the United States, oral bromelain is marketed as a dietary supplement, while a distinct prescription topical preparation enriched in bromelain-derived enzymes is FDA-approved for removing dead tissue from certain burns.
