What is Calcium-D-glucarate?

In plain words

Calcium-D-glucarate is a compound related to a substance naturally found in the body and some plant foods. The body can turn it into a substance that may help keep certain hormones and other chemicals from being reabsorbed as they leave through the gut. Researchers study its effects on hormone removal and the body's handling of unwanted chemicals. Most evidence comes from laboratory and animal research, with limited human evidence on benefits and long-term safety.

Technical definition

Calcium-D-glucarate is the calcium salt of D-glucaric acid, a sugar acid found naturally in the body and in some fruits and vegetables. D-glucaric acid can form D-glucaro-1,4-lactone, which inhibits beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme that can reverse glucuronidation and allow some compounds destined for excretion to be reabsorbed from the intestine. It is marketed in the United States as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
