What is Chasteberry / vitex?

In plain words

Chasteberry, also called vitex, is an herbal extract made from the fruit of the chaste tree. Some of its chemicals may affect signals that control prolactin, a hormone involved in milk production and reproductive function. Researchers study it mainly for premenstrual symptoms, including breast tenderness. Some trials suggest benefits, but the evidence has limits, and it may interact with medicines that affect hormones or dopamine, a chemical messenger.

Technical definition

Chasteberry is a botanical preparation derived from the fruit of Vitex agnus-castus, containing diterpenes, iridoid glycosides, and flavonoids rather than a single active compound. Some constituents show dopamine D2 receptor activity in laboratory studies, a proposed mechanism for effects on pituitary prolactin release and menstrual symptoms. In the United States, chasteberry is marketed as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved drug.
