What is Chlorella?

In plain words

Chlorella is a tiny green freshwater alga sold as a supplement. The body breaks down its digestible parts and uses the nutrients, though its tough outer wall can limit digestion. Researchers study it for possible effects on cholesterol, blood sugar, and immune function. Human studies are generally small, and it can cause digestive upset or allergic reactions.

Technical definition

Chlorella is a genus of unicellular freshwater green microalgae whose biomass is used in dietary supplements and contains proteins, pigments, lipids, and micronutrients. Its digestible components enter normal nutrient metabolism rather than acting through a single defined molecular target or receptor; processing that disrupts the cell wall can improve nutrient accessibility. In the United States, chlorella products are marketed as dietary supplements, not FDA-approved treatments for disease.
