What is Citicoline?
In plain words
Citicoline is a substance the body naturally makes to help build the outer layers of cells. The body breaks ingested citicoline into parts it can reuse to make cell materials and a chemical that helps nerves send messages. Researchers study it for memory, attention, and recovery after stroke. Evidence for meaningful benefits is mixed, and large stroke trials have not shown a clear improvement in recovery.
Technical definition
Citicoline (CDP-choline) is an endogenous nucleotide intermediate composed of cytidine linked to choline through a diphosphate bridge, with a central role in phosphatidylcholine synthesis via the Kennedy pathway. Orally administered citicoline is metabolized into choline and cytidine-derived metabolites that support phospholipid and acetylcholine synthesis, rather than acting primarily at a single receptor. It is marketed as a dietary supplement in the United States, where it is not FDA-approved to treat disease; regulatory status differs internationally.
