What is Coenzyme Q10 / CoQ10?

In plain words

CoQ10 is a substance your body makes naturally and that is also sold as a supplement. Your cells use it to release energy from food and help protect cell membranes from damage. Researchers study it for heart conditions, migraines, and muscle symptoms linked to cholesterol-lowering statin medicines. Evidence of benefit varies by condition, and CoQ10 can interact with medicines such as warfarin.

Technical definition

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an endogenous, lipid-soluble benzoquinone with a ten-unit isoprenoid side chain, occurring in oxidized (ubiquinone) and reduced (ubiquinol) forms. Rather than acting through a specific receptor, it transfers electrons from mitochondrial respiratory complexes I and II to complex III to support ATP synthesis; its reduced form also acts as an antioxidant in lipid membranes. In the United States, CoQ10 is marketed as a dietary supplement and is not FDA-approved to treat disease.
