What is Cranberry extract?

In plain words

Cranberry extract is a concentrated preparation made from cranberries. The body and gut bacteria break down its plant compounds, and some resulting substances pass into urine, where they may help keep certain bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract. Researchers study it mainly for preventing repeat urinary tract infections. Cranberry products can lower infection risk in some groups, but results vary by product, and they do not treat an existing infection.

Technical definition

Cranberry extract is a botanical preparation derived from Vaccinium macrocarpon fruit and contains polyphenols, including A-type proanthocyanidins. Rather than acting through a single established receptor, cranberry constituents and metabolites may interfere with the adhesion of uropathogenic Escherichia coli to urinary tract surfaces. In the United States, cranberry extracts are marketed as dietary supplements, not approved drugs for preventing or treating urinary tract infections.
