What is Devil’s claw?
In plain words
Devil’s claw is a plant whose storage roots are used in herbal products. Digestion breaks down some of its plant chemicals, and the body absorbs and processes their components. Researchers study its extracts for lower back pain and arthritis pain. Some studies suggest benefits, but the evidence is limited, and stomach upset or diarrhea can occur.
Technical definition
Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a southern African botanical whose secondary storage tubers contain iridoid glycosides, notably harpagoside. Laboratory studies suggest modulation of inflammatory signaling and mediator production, but no single molecular target or receptor has been established as responsible for its clinical effects. It is marketed in the United States as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
