What is Digestive-enzyme blends?
In plain words
Digestive-enzyme blends contain proteins that help break food into smaller pieces. They work in the gut to help release nutrients the body can absorb. Researchers study them for digestive symptoms and conditions in which the body makes too few enzymes. Evidence is strongest for prescription pancreatic enzymes in people with an enzyme deficiency, not for general supplement blends.
Technical definition
Digestive-enzyme blends are mixtures of protein catalysts, commonly including proteases, lipases, and amylases derived from animal, microbial, or plant sources. Rather than acting through a receptor, these enzymes act within the digestive tract to hydrolyze dietary proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into smaller components that can be further digested or absorbed. In the United States, many blends are sold as dietary supplements without FDA premarket approval, while specific pancreatic enzyme products are approved prescription drugs.
