What is Eggshell-membrane extract?

In plain words

Eggshell-membrane extract comes from the thin layer inside an eggshell and contains proteins and other materials found in joint tissues. Digestion breaks down many of these components rather than sending them directly to the joints. Researchers study it for joint pain and stiffness, but evidence of benefit is limited. Egg allergy is a safety concern.

Technical definition

Eggshell-membrane extract is a heterogeneous animal-derived material obtained from the thin membrane lining eggshells, containing collagen, other proteins, and glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate. It has no established single molecular target or receptor; proposed effects on inflammatory signaling and connective-tissue metabolism remain under investigation. It is marketed as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for joint disease.
