What is Fenugreek?
In plain words
Fenugreek is a plant whose seeds are used as a spice and in supplements. Its seed fiber can slow how quickly the body absorbs carbohydrates. Researchers study it for blood sugar control, cholesterol, and breast milk production, but reliable evidence of benefit is limited. It can cause digestive upset or allergic reactions and may interact with medicines.
Technical definition
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a leguminous botanical whose seeds contain galactomannan fiber, steroidal saponins, trigonelline, and the amino acid 4-hydroxyisoleucine. It has no single established molecular target; seed fiber can slow carbohydrate absorption, while 4-hydroxyisoleucine has shown glucose-dependent insulin secretion effects in preclinical studies. Fenugreek is used as a food and marketed in dietary supplements, which are not FDA-approved treatments for disease.
