What is GABA?
In plain words
GABA is an amino acid that the body makes to help quiet nerve signals in the brain. People study GABA supplements for stress and sleep, but swallowed GABA may not reach the brain in meaningful amounts. Evidence for these benefits is limited, and long-term supplement safety is not well established.
Technical definition
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid synthesized from glutamate and the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the adult central nervous system. It acts through GABA-A ligand-gated chloride channels and GABA-B G-protein-coupled receptors to reduce neuronal excitability; orally ingested GABA has limited and incompletely understood access to the brain. In the United States, GABA is marketed as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for anxiety or sleep disorders.
