What is Ginseng?

In plain words

Ginseng is an herb whose roots contain substances called ginsenosides. Gut bacteria break down some of these substances into forms the body can absorb. Researchers study ginseng for fatigue, blood sugar control, and memory, but results vary across products and studies. It can cause sleep problems and interact with medicines.

Technical definition

Ginseng is a botanical preparation derived primarily from the roots of Panax species, including Asian or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius); its characteristic constituents are triterpenoid saponins called ginsenosides. Gut microbes convert some ginsenosides into metabolites, and experimental studies suggest effects on multiple cellular signaling pathways rather than a single established molecular target. In the United States, ginseng is marketed as a dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
