What is Lion’s mane?

In plain words

Lion’s mane is an edible mushroom also sold as a supplement. The body breaks down some of its ingredients, while some mushroom fibers reach the gut and interact with gut bacteria. Researchers study it for possible effects on memory, mood, and nerve health. Human studies are small and limited, and allergic reactions or stomach upset can occur.

Technical definition

Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible fungus used in dietary supplements; its constituents include polysaccharides, hericenones associated with the fruiting body, and erinacines associated with the mycelium. It has no established single molecular target in humans, although preclinical studies suggest that certain constituents influence nerve growth factor signaling and inflammatory pathways. In the United States, lion’s mane supplements are not FDA-approved treatments for disease.
