What is Lutein?

In plain words

Lutein is a yellow pigment found in leafy greens and other foods. The body absorbs it with dietary fat and stores some in the back of the eye, where it helps filter blue light. Researchers study it for eye health, including age-related macular degeneration, a condition that damages central vision. Evidence for slowing this disease comes mainly from combination supplements in specific patient groups, not lutein alone.

Technical definition

Lutein is a plant-derived xanthophyll carotenoid with a 40-carbon structure and two hydroxyl groups; humans obtain it from dietary sources rather than synthesizing it. It accumulates in the retinal macula, where it filters short-wavelength visible light and helps limit oxidative damage rather than acting through a single receptor. It is marketed as a dietary supplement, not an approved drug for treating eye disease.
