What is MCT oil?

In plain words

MCT oil is a processed fat usually made from coconut or palm kernel oil. The body breaks it down and sends much of it directly to the liver for energy, including making ketones [an alternative fuel]. Researchers study it for fat absorption problems, weight management, and brain energy. Evidence for weight and memory benefits is limited, and it can cause diarrhea or stomach cramps.

Technical definition

MCT oil is a mixture of medium-chain triglycerides—glycerol esterified to three fatty acids—typically enriched in caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) acids derived from coconut or palm kernel oil. Rather than acting through a specific receptor, it is digested into fatty acids that are absorbed predominantly into portal circulation and rapidly oxidized in the liver, where they can support ketone production. In the United States, MCT oil is sold as a food ingredient or dietary supplement, not as an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
