What is Monolaurin?

In plain words

Monolaurin is a fat-like compound made from glycerol and lauric acid, a fatty acid found in coconut oil. During digestion, the body can break it down into these components and use them in fat metabolism. Researchers study its effects on certain bacteria, fungi, and viruses, mainly in laboratory experiments. Human studies are limited, so benefits and safety as an oral supplement are not well established.

Technical definition

Monolaurin, or glycerol monolaurate, is a monoacylglycerol formed by esterifying glycerol with the 12-carbon saturated fatty acid lauric acid. Its antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies involves interactions with microbial lipid membranes and interference with membrane-associated signaling, rather than a single established receptor target. It is marketed in dietary supplements in the United States but is not FDA-approved to prevent or treat disease.
