What is Multivitamin?

In plain words

A multivitamin combines several vitamins and may also contain minerals. The body uses these nutrients to support normal functions such as releasing energy from food and maintaining bones and blood cells. Researchers study whether multivitamins help fill nutrient gaps or affect long-term health. Evidence for preventing major chronic diseases is mixed, and excessive amounts of some nutrients can be harmful.

Technical definition

A multivitamin is a blend of vitamins, often combined with minerals, rather than a single compound with a defined molecular structure. Its components act through multiple pathways, including serving as enzyme cofactors, supporting antioxidant systems, and regulating gene expression; there is no single molecular target or receptor. In the United States, multivitamins are generally regulated as dietary supplements and do not require FDA approval before marketing.
