What is NMN?

In plain words

NMN is a substance naturally found in the body that helps make NAD+, a molecule cells need to release energy from food and maintain themselves. The body uses NMN as a building block for NAD+. Researchers study it for possible effects on aging-related changes in metabolism and physical function. Human studies remain limited, and lasting health benefits and long-term safety have not been established.

Technical definition

Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is an endogenous nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and a phosphate group, and is a precursor in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) biosynthesis. Nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases convert NMN to NAD+, a coenzyme involved in redox metabolism and a substrate for enzymes such as sirtuins and PARPs that regulate cellular stress responses and DNA repair. NMN is not an FDA-approved drug; its regulatory treatment in consumer products varies by jurisdiction.
