What is Olive-leaf extract?

In plain words

Olive-leaf extract is made from olive tree leaves and contains plant compounds such as oleuropein. The body breaks these compounds down and processes them before clearing them. Researchers study the extract for possible effects on blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. Human studies are limited, and the extract may interact with medicines that lower blood pressure or blood sugar.

Technical definition

Olive-leaf extract is a botanical preparation from the leaves of Olea europaea containing polyphenols, notably oleuropein, a secoiridoid glycoside, and hydroxytyrosol. It has no single established molecular target; laboratory research suggests effects on oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling, and vascular function, while oleuropein is metabolized in part to hydroxytyrosol and related compounds. In the United States, it is marketed as a dietary supplement rather than an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
