What is Oregano oil?

In plain words

Oregano oil is a concentrated plant extract that often contains compounds called carvacrol and thymol. After it is swallowed, the body absorbs and breaks down these compounds, then removes their breakdown products mainly in urine. Researchers study its effects on germs and inflammation, but laboratory findings do not establish that it treats infections in people. Concentrated oregano oil can irritate the mouth, stomach, or skin.

Technical definition

Oregano oil is a botanical preparation derived from Origanum vulgare; its volatile oil contains variable proportions of phenolic monoterpenes, notably carvacrol and thymol, and is not synonymous with isolated carvacrol. These constituents can disrupt microbial cell membranes in laboratory models rather than acting through a single established human receptor. Oregano oil is marketed in dietary supplements, but it is not FDA-approved to treat or prevent disease.
