What is Passionflower?
In plain words
Passionflower is a climbing plant used in herbal teas and extracts. The body breaks down its plant chemicals, some of which may affect signals that calm brain activity. Researchers study it for anxiety and sleep, but human studies are small and do not establish clear benefits. It can cause drowsiness and may add to the effects of sedating medicines.
Technical definition
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a botanical whose aerial parts contain flavonoids and other plant constituents rather than a single defined active compound. Extracts have been investigated for modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling, which reduces neuronal excitability, but their molecular targets and mechanisms in humans are not firmly established. In the United States, passionflower is marketed as a dietary supplement and is not FDA-approved to treat disease.
