What is Peppermint oil?
In plain words
Peppermint oil is a concentrated oil from the peppermint plant. Its components can relax muscles in the gut, and some capsules have a coating that delays release until they reach the intestine. Researchers study it for belly pain and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Evidence supports some short-term symptom relief, but it can cause heartburn.
Technical definition
Peppermint oil is a volatile botanical oil distilled from Mentha × piperita, composed primarily of monoterpenes such as menthol and menthone; enteric-coated formulations delay release until the intestine. Menthol activates TRPM8 cold-sensitive ion channels, while inhibition of calcium influx in gastrointestinal smooth muscle contributes to antispasmodic effects. Products are regulated as supplements or herbal medicines depending on jurisdiction and formulation.
