What is Pomegranate extract?

In plain words

Pomegranate extract is a concentrated preparation made from parts of the pomegranate fruit. Gut bacteria turn some of its plant compounds into smaller substances that the body can absorb, though this varies from person to person. Researchers study it for possible effects on blood pressure, blood vessel health, and inflammation. Human studies have shown mixed results, so its health benefits are not firmly established.

Technical definition

Pomegranate extract is a botanical preparation derived from Punica granatum fruit components, containing variable amounts of polyphenols such as the ellagitannins punicalagins and ellagic acid. Ellagitannins can release ellagic acid, which intestinal microbes convert into urolithins; these compounds are studied for effects on oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling rather than action at a single established receptor. Pomegranate extract is marketed as a dietary supplement in the United States and is not FDA-approved to treat or prevent disease.
