What is Resveratrol?

In plain words

Resveratrol is a natural plant substance found in grapes, some berries, and Japanese knotweed. The body absorbs it but quickly changes most of it into other forms. Researchers study it for possible effects on heart health, blood sugar, and aging. Human studies have not established clear benefits for preventing disease or extending life.

Technical definition

Resveratrol is a plant-derived stilbenoid polyphenol found in grapes, berries, peanuts, and Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum); its trans isomer is the most widely studied form. It influences multiple cellular pathways, including AMPK signaling and sirtuin-associated processes, rather than acting through one established receptor, and is rapidly metabolized into sulfate and glucuronide conjugates. In the United States, it is marketed as a dietary supplement and is not FDA-approved to treat or prevent disease.
