What is Spermidine?

In plain words

Spermidine is a substance your body makes that is also found in foods such as wheat germ. Your cells use it to help make proteins and support normal cell functions. Researchers study its role in cell cleanup, healthy aging, and memory. Much of the evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, and supplements have not been shown to extend human life.

Technical definition

Spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine with three amine groups, synthesized from putrescine in cells and also obtained from foods and gut microbial metabolism. It supplies the aminobutyl group required for hypusination of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A), supporting protein synthesis, and influences autophagy and other cellular processes rather than acting through a single specific receptor. Spermidine is marketed in dietary supplements in the United States but is not FDA-approved as a treatment for aging or disease.
