What is Spirulina?

In plain words

Spirulina is a food made from tiny organisms often called blue-green algae. The body breaks down its proteins and other nutrients during digestion. Researchers study it for possible effects on cholesterol, blood sugar, and inflammation, but health benefits are not firmly established. Products can be contaminated with harmful substances, including toxins from other algae.

Technical definition

Spirulina is a cyanobacterial biomass, commonly derived from Arthrospira platensis or Arthrospira maxima, containing proteins, phycocyanin pigments, carotenoids, and other nutrients. It has no single established molecular target or receptor; digestion releases nutrients, while its pigments and other constituents are investigated for effects on oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling. In the United States, it is marketed as a food or dietary supplement, not an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
