What is Turkey tail?

In plain words

Turkey tail is a mushroom that contains complex sugars studied for their effects on the immune system. Some of these sugars interact with immune cells in the gut, and gut bacteria can break down others. Researchers study specific extracts for immune support and as additions to standard cancer treatment. Results from these extracts do not establish that ordinary turkey tail supplements treat cancer.

Technical definition

Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor, also known as Coriolus versicolor) is a medicinal mushroom whose constituents include beta-glucans and protein-bound polysaccharides, notably polysaccharide-K (PSK) and polysaccharopeptide (PSP). These constituents can interact with innate immune recognition receptors, including Dectin-1 and Toll-like receptors, influencing immune-cell signaling rather than acting through a single molecular target. Turkey tail supplements are not FDA-approved medicines; a standardized PSK preparation has been used as an approved adjunct to cancer treatment in Japan.
