What is Urolithin A?

In plain words

Urolithin A is a substance that some gut bacteria make from compounds in foods such as pomegranates and walnuts. After absorption, the body processes it mainly into modified forms that circulate in the blood and are eventually removed. Researchers study whether it helps cells clear damaged mitochondria [tiny structures that produce energy] and supports muscle function during aging. Early human studies show some promising findings, but lasting health benefits and long-term safety remain uncertain.

Technical definition

Urolithin A is a dibenzo-α-pyrone metabolite produced by intestinal microbes from ellagic acid, which can arise from dietary ellagitannins found in foods such as pomegranates and walnuts. It modulates mitochondrial quality-control pathways and promotes mitophagy, the selective removal of damaged mitochondria; a single definitive receptor target has not been established. It is marketed as a dietary supplement in the United States, not as an FDA-approved treatment for disease.
