What is Vitamin B5 / pantothenic acid?

In plain words

Vitamin B5 is a vitamin found in many foods that the body needs to function normally. The body turns it into helper molecules that release energy from food and help build fats. Researchers study its role in metabolism and the effects of too little B5. Deficiency is rare, and evidence that extra B5 improves health in people who already get enough is limited.

Technical definition

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is an essential water-soluble vitamin composed of pantoic acid linked to beta-alanine; calcium pantothenate is a commonly used salt form. Rather than acting through a specific receptor, it is converted into coenzyme A and the phosphopantetheine component of acyl carrier protein, supporting acyl-group transfer in energy metabolism and fatty acid synthesis. It is available as a dietary supplement, which in the United States is not subject to the same premarket approval requirements as drugs.
