What is Zeaxanthin?
In plain words
Zeaxanthin is a yellow-orange pigment found in foods such as corn, peppers, and leafy greens. The body absorbs it with dietary fat and concentrates some of it in the retina, the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Researchers study its role in protecting vision, especially in age-related macular degeneration, which damages central vision. Much of the clinical evidence involves combinations of nutrients, so benefits cannot be attributed to zeaxanthin alone.
Technical definition
Zeaxanthin is a dietary xanthophyll carotenoid with a 40-carbon conjugated backbone and two hydroxyl groups, produced by plants and certain microorganisms. It accumulates in the retinal macula, where it absorbs short-wavelength visible light and helps limit oxidative damage through photophysical and antioxidant mechanisms rather than a specific receptor target. It is marketed as a dietary supplement, not as an approved drug treatment for eye disease.
